PADI or SSI. The Gilis or Komodo. A real certification or a one-off try dive. Here is how the choices actually differ — and the cases where we are the wrong answer.

Most people arrive having already made two of these without realising it.
The card itself
SSI, NAUI and RAID teach to comparable standards and are recognised internationally. PADI has issued over 28 million certifications since 1966, so it is the card most dive centres recognise on sight without a phone call.

Where you learn
Komodo and Raja Ampat are better dive destinations. They are worse classrooms — currents, depth and boat logistics that work against a beginner. Learn here, then go there certified.

How deep you commit
A Discover Scuba is one supervised dive to 12 metres that expires the moment you surface. Open Water is three days and a licence that lasts a lifetime, to 18 metres, anywhere.

Who teaches you
The gap shows in ratios, servicing intervals and what is on the boat. Ask any operator: how many students per instructor, when was the regulator last serviced, is there oxygen aboard, and is certification processing in the price.

Choose us if
Warm, clear, current-free water is the easiest place in Indonesia to learn. Nothing about the Gilis fights a beginner.
A maximum of four students per instructor, against the PADI standard of eight. On a skill that is not going well, that difference is everything.
eLearning before you fly plus three days here. Most alternatives need four to five because the theory happens on site.
The course is one number, and on the Gilis there are no cars — daily transport is $0 to $5 against $10 to $20 in south Bali.

The four questions in the comparison above work on any operator, anywhere. If a dive centre cannot answer them quickly, that is your answer.
Go elsewhere if
The Gilis are turtles, reef sharks and macro. For mantas and pelagics at scale, go to Komodo or Raja Ampat — certified first.
We teach recreational PADI to 40 metres. Trimix, rebreathers and cave work are not what this centre does.
A certification needs three days minimum. With less, a Discover Scuba elsewhere is a more honest use of your time than starting something you cannot finish.
We are not the cheapest on the island and do not try to be. The difference buys ratios, servicing and oxygen on the boat.
Telling you when not to book us costs us bookings and saves you a bad week. If one of those four describes you, say so when you message and we will point you somewhere better.
The obvious comparison
It is the question we get most, and it deserves more than a paragraph. Course fees are close; what separates them is accommodation, daily transport, and how far you travel to each dive. We put the numbers side by side.

Not better — more widely recognised. Both teach to comparable standards and both are accepted internationally. PADI has issued over 28 million certifications, so it is the card a dive centre anywhere is least likely to question.
They are better dive destinations and worse classrooms. Current, depth and long boat rides all work against someone learning buoyancy. Certify here where the water is calm, then go there able to enjoy it.
Only if you want one supervised dive to 12 metres and nothing more — it is not a certification and expires when you surface. If there is any chance you will dive again, Open Water is three days and lasts a lifetime.

No. Cheaper courses exist on all three islands. What you get for the difference is a 4:1 ratio instead of 8:1, six-monthly equipment servicing, oxygen on every boat, and no charge for extra sessions.
