Lombok vs Bali Where the money actually goes

Course fees are close. What separates the two is everything around the course — where you sleep, how far you travel to each dive, and what a day costs once you are there.

The real comparison

Three Days, Two Islands

The course is the smaller half of the decision. Ask us for our course price; everything around it is costed both ways below.

Gili Islands

No cars on the islands, so getting to the dive centre costs nothing. Every site is inside a 15-minute boat ride.

Bali

Course + 3 nights + food

≈ $780 USD

$380–500 course · $60–90/night · $25/day · $10–20 transport

Higher accommodation in the southern hubs, plus daily scooter or taxi. Nusa Penida and Tulamben both mean real travel time to each dive.

Indicative only, using mid-range accommodation and the published Bali course range; our own course price is quoted on request. Bali is a large island — Amed and Tulamben cost considerably less than Seminyak or Canggu, and a course based there narrows the gap substantially.

Beyond the bill

Three Differences That Are Not Money

Both are good. They are good at different things.

What you will see

Marine life

Bali has the Liberty wreck at Tulamben and mola mola season off Nusa Penida. The Gilis give you turtles on almost every dive, reef sharks at Shark Point, and Biorock restoration you can swim over.

How your day runs

Logistics

Bali courses often work to a boat schedule set by distance — early starts, long transfers. On the Gilis every site is under 15 minutes, so the pace is set by how fast you learn.

Above water

Bali offers range — surf, volcanoes, restaurants, traffic. The Gilis offer the absence of all of it. No cars, no motorbikes, and a pace set by a bicycle.

How to Vet the Operator

Instructor tenure

Ask how long your specific instructor has taught and at what rating. "Our team is experienced" is not an answer.

Equipment servicing

Ask for the interval, then look at the gear. We service Scubapro and Aqualung every six months, ahead of the manufacturers' schedule.

Oxygen on the boat

Emergency oxygen, a first aid kit, a radio, and a written emergency action plan. The nearest chamber to the Gilis is in Mataram, about 90 minutes away.

Price transparency

Certification processing, equipment rental and marine park fees should all be named up front. These are the three most commonly added at the end.

Diver with a full equipment set and underwater camera rig

Check your travel insurance covers scuba to your certified depth — 18 metres for Open Water, 30 for Advanced. Many standard policies exclude diving outright, including chamber treatment.

Then Pick Your Month

The Gilis dive all year, but the water does not look the same in February as it does in August. Visibility, marine life and price all move with the season — and the season is the one variable still worth optimising once you have chosen where.
